Why Personal Branding Photography Isn’t About Looking Perfect. It’s About Being Seen
During lockdown, I was that rare unicorn—one of a few people who actually lost weight.
It wasn’t because I suddenly became a green juice and yoga person (I wish).
It was gallstones. Very painful and not at all glamorous.
But I was the slimmest I’d been in quite some time and decided to take some self-portraits, mainly as a way to keep myself busy whilst I couldn’t work. I liked them. And I’ve used them since.
Five years later, and life happened: perimenopause, a couple of really challenging years, a few too many emotional chocolate biscuits, and the fairly frequent celebratory bottle of wine for even the smallest of life wins.
So, there I was, looking at those old photos thinking, “I’ll update them when I lose a few pounds…”
Sound familiar?
We’ve all been there. The “I’ll do photos when…” story. When I lose weight. When I feel more confident. When business is booming. When life feels less chaotic.
But here’s the thing: the right time never arrives on its own.
What Personal Branding Photography in London Really Means
When I talk about personal branding photography, people often assume it’s just fancy headshots. But it’s so much more than that.
It’s about having a bank of images that truly show who you are: your personality, your values, how you work, and what it’s like for your clients to work with you.
Because in today’s world, people don’t buy from faceless logos. They buy from people they know, like, and trust.
And that first impression? It can take as little as one-tenth of a second.
When your photos reflect the real you—relaxed, approachable, and doing what you do best—they don’t just make you look professional. They make you recognisable and memorable.
Why Visibility and Personal Branding Photography Matter Even More in the Age of AI
The online world is changing fast. Is there anything AI can’t do?! It can write your blog posts, generate images, and even create “stock” humans that look eerily real.
Which means authenticity has become your biggest advantage.
When so much content online appears polished but soulless, showing your real face, your real story, and your real energy is what sets you apart.
Your audience wants to know there’s a real person behind the business—someone they can trust, relate to, and believe in.
Personal branding photography does what AI can’t: it captures your human side. The genuine expressions, the way you move, the small details that make you, you.
That’s what people connect with. That’s what makes them remember you. And that’s why showing up online as yourself is more important now than ever before.
Why Women Often Struggle With Visibility In Business
Many of my clients are women over a ‘certain age’—they’re smart, successful, and quietly brilliant—and hate being photographed.
They tell me things like:
• “I’m not photogenic.”
• “I never like photos of myself.”
I get it. Truly. That is me.
We’ve spent years being conditioned to see ourselves through a lens of judgement—our own, and everyone else’s. Add a few decades of cameras that seem determined to catch us mid-blink, tummy out, double chin(s) on show, and it’s no wonder we’d rather hide behind our laptops.
But visibility isn’t vanity. It’s how clients find you, connect with you, and feel confident choosing you. They can’t find you if you’re not visible.
When you have photos you actually like—photos that feel like you—you naturally show up more. You post more. You share more. And that’s when your business starts to grow in ways that feel natural and sustainable.
My Approach to Personal Branding Photography: Making the Camera Feel Like a Friend
When we work together, you don’t have to “perform.” You just have to be you.
We start with a discovery call to chat about your business, your audience, and what you want people to feel when they see you online. Then we plan your session around that story: your favourite spaces, outfits that feel comfortable, and colours and textures that reflect your brand’s personality.
During the shoot, my job is part photographer, part therapist, part comedian.
I’ll guide you into flattering positions, use the best light, help you relax, and distract you from that voice in your head that says, “don’t smile too wide.” My job is to make sure you have the best photos possible of yourself (and certainly better than the photo of me above!).
I pay attention to how you stand, sit, and move so there’s no stiff or awkward posing. I want to capture those small moments that show your real character.
By the end, most people say, “That was actually fun!”
You’ll end up with a variety of photos—different outfits, backgrounds, expressions, and settings—so you have plenty to choose from. And when you see the final images, hopefully you’ll recognise yourself as others already see you.
How to Get the Most From Your Personal BrandING Photos
Having a personal branding gallery isn’t just about having nice pictures to post now and again.
It’s about having a bank of content that supports your visibility consistently.
You can use your images to:
• Update your website and LinkedIn profile
• Post confidently on social media
• Create consistent branding across your marketing materials
• Pitch yourself for podcasts, PR, and speaking opportunities
• Remind yourself (on tough days) that you’re absolutely worthy of being seen
Think of it as visual confidence on tap.
You Deserve to Be Seen Now, Not “Someday”
Here’s what I know from personal experience: when I have photos of myself that I actually like, I show up online as me. Not the polished, filtered version—the real me.
And people respond to that because it feels genuine.
You don’t have to wait until you feel ready or look a certain way. Your visibility, and your business, deserve the version of you that exists right now.
Because when you show up as yourself, people notice. They connect. They remember you. And that’s what builds trust and opportunity.
